Ms Rita Sim (Director & Co-Founder), holds a BSc (Hon) in Chemistry and Management from King’s College, University of London and a Postgraduate diploma in Chinese from Ealing College, London. For the past 20 years, she has been actively involved in her family business, Polychem-NPKing Group of companies which has offices in 5 countries around Asia.
She has played several important roles simultaneously. In 2004, she was appointed to the board of Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad (SCMCB) as Executive Director. Four years later, Ms Sim coordinated and managed the merger of three public-listed media companies – Ming Pao Enterprise Corporation Limited (Hong Kong), Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad (Malaysia) and Nanyang Press Holdings Berhad (Malaysia). The merged entity, Media Chinese International Ltd (MCIL), was the first Malaysian company to have dual primary listings on the mainboards of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad. MCIL is now one of the largest media groups in Asia.
As her role required her to keep a keen eye on fine detail, as well as the big picture, Ms Sim is profoundly familiar with the numerous intricate facets of the media. She also has extensive experience in setting up joint-venture companies with foreign partners in manufacturing and utilities. Between 1987 and 2004, she helped in the establishment of first-generation Independent Power Plants or IPPs in Malaysia. She also participated in the turnkey development of the Genting Sanyen power plant in Selangor and later, took charge of the construction and management of the Sutera Harbour Resort co-generation power plant in Sabah.
In 2009, she was appointed to the board of SKF Bearings (M) Sdn Bhd in Nilai, the world’s largest manufacturer of bearings and a world-class provider of engineering solutions. She is also a board member and Malaysian representative for BG Asia Pacific Ltd, a subsidiary of BG Group, a world leader in natural gas. As such, Ms Sim is well-acquainted with the requirements of regulatory bodies around the world.
Currently, as Trustee of GAB Foundation, set up by Guinness Anchor Berhad, Ms Sim participates in a wide range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects. Capitalising on her many years of experience in the business and corporate sectors, SME Corp has also invited Ms Sim to mentor and advise up-and-coming women entrepreneurs. This role involves coaching these young women on how to profile themselves for greater market visibility.
In 2011, Ms Sim was named Woman Super Achiever at the 2nd CMO Asia Awards for Excellence in Marketing and Branding. She also authored a book entitled “Unmistakably Chinese, Genuinely Malaysian”. In 2014, Ms Sim and Ms Soong produced another book entitled “Give & Take: Writings on the Malaysian Chinese Community”.
